Celebrating women in healthcare communications
Each year, International Women’s Day gives us a moment to recognise the contribution of women across industries, including healthcare communications. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on how we can support women in scientific communications roles year-round, not just on a single day.
I’m incredibly proud that Wellmark is a women-led agency with high female representation across our team. Not because it’s a label or a positioning line, but because it reflects the kind of environment we’ve built – one where female talent in healthcare communications can grow, lead and do their best work.
That said, this isn’t a story about women instead of men. Some of our longest-serving and most valued team members are men, and their expertise and perspective are a hugely important part of our culture. For us, the goal isn’t to tilt the balance in any one direction. It’s to make sure great talent – including female talent in a science-leaning industry – is supported, visible and empowered.

Healthcare communications are closer to STEM than people think
The conversation about women in STEM often focuses on research, medicine or technology. Healthcare communications form part of that ecosystem too, because they sit at the intersection of science, strategy and creativity. To do this work well, you need to understand clinical data, therapeutic areas, regulatory environments, and the realities of both healthcare professionals and patients.
Successful communication is an important aspect of strong scientific thinking. If we want better healthcare outcomes, we need voices who can not only develop new treatments, but also explain them clearly, position them effectively, and provide patients and healthcare professionals with the information they need to make informed decisions.
Over our 27-year history, many of the women who have worked in our agency have come from science, pharmacy, medical, nursing and research backgrounds. In many ways, they reflect the broader movement around women in STEM. The challenge isn’t just attracting women into science-related fields – it’s creating career paths (traditional and non-traditional) – where they can stay, grow and lead. Healthcare communications provide a real opportunity for women to do that.
Looking ahead
As International Women’s Day reminds us, supporting women in any domain goes well beyond a single day or symbolic gestures. It’s vital that we build structures and cultural environments that allow the best minds – scientific, strategic and creative – to thrive.
At Wellmark, we’re proud to be a women-led agency. We’re equally proud of the talented men who help shape our work every day. Together, we focus on one thing above all: building an agency where all our team members have the opportunity to do their best work and create healthcare communications that make a real difference.
